Sir Albert Howard: The Father of Modern Organic Agriculture

Sir Albert Howard (1873–1947) was a visionary British botanist whose pioneering research in India laid the scientific foundations for the modern organic farming movement. Rejecting the 20th-century rush toward chemical fertilizers, Howard argued that the health of soil, plants, animals, and humans is “one and indivisible.”

Key Contributions:
The Indore Method: Developed a revolutionary system for composting agricultural waste into high-quality humus, mimicking natural forest decay.

The Law of Return: Championed the principle that all organic matter taken from the soil must be returned to it to maintain permanent fertility.

Soil & Health Connection: Was among the first to scientifically link human malnutrition and disease directly to soil degradation and industrial farming practices.
